Multiplicity

Definition: The algebraic multiplicity of an eigenvalue $\lambda$ is its multiplicity as a root of the characteristic polynomial. The geometric multiplicity is the dimension of the eigenspace $E_\lambda$. Always: geometric multiplicity $\leq$ algebraic multiplicity.
