    There is an alternative way to think of MF theory as a search for an optimal solution within a variational manifold, e.g. Slater determinants in the case of interacting fermions. Recent references, with nontrivial results but written in an educational way are papers that include Demler and Cirac as coauthors (2017, 2018)

    @Ivar Martin: very interesting point. I came to understand that mean-field theory is actually much deeper than one would think from the impression given in textbooks. Could you please post the link to the papers? Googling didn't help.
