To add an inline equation wrap your equation in \$tags. Stand-alone equations should be wrapped in double \$\$tags. To have equations numbered use $$...$$, without \$ tags.

Inline equation:
$x^2$

How it shows:
$x^2$

Stand-alone equation:
$$x^2$$

How it shows:
$$x^2$$

A peculiarity to keep in mind. Use
$1\lt 2$ or $1< 2$ (notice space after "<" sign to avoid being interpreted as HTML tag) to produce

$1\lt 2$

Numbered equation:

In equation \eqref{eq:sample}, we find the value of an
interesting integral:

$$\int_0^\infty \frac{x^3}{e^x-1}\,dx = \frac{\pi^4}{15} \label{eq:sample}$$
